The Story of the Piece: The Space Between

The Space Between began as an experiment in creating something I couldn't achieve on a single surface: distance.

I didn't want to simply create an image of a galaxy. I wanted the viewer to feel as though they were looking through one.

Across five separate resin pours, galaxies, stars, trails of light and shifting pigments were created at different depths. Each cured layer became another surface on which to work — creating real physical space between the elements.

And then the piece fought back.

Partway through its creation, the backing membrane failed and resin escaped from a work that had already taken multiple pours and curing stages to build. Rather than abandon it, I repaired and resealed it, prepared the surface again and continued.

As the final layers developed, the challenge changed from what else I could add to what I should leave alone.

The finished work cannot be seen completely from any one position. Details disappear into darkness and emerge again as the light changes or the viewer moves around it.

And that is where its name came from.

The Space Between isn't only about the galaxies.

It's about what lies between them — between one layer and another, between darkness and reflected light, and between what we notice immediately and what waits to be discovered.

Don't just look at the galaxies.
Look into the space between.

There is always more.
