Story of the Piece: Flow

Water has always been the constant in my life.

From growing up in the ranges of Victoria and taking my children to Stony Creek Falls at Mt Tamborine - creeks flowed through my childhood to adulthood the way they flow through country — unhurried, inevitable, indifferent to anything but gravity.

The sound of water over rock is one of the first things I remember. It's one of the things that brought me to FNQ, where the rainforest rivers run cold and clear and the local fish hold still in the shallows until something startles them into motion.

This piece was a technical challenge I set myself — foreground and background in a glasscape, two planes of depth in glass and resin. The rainforest canopy above, the creek below, and everything in between alive with the things water carries: driftwood, stones, fallen leaves, small fish moving in the current.

It is not one place. It is every waterway I have ever loved.

Flow is also a reminder, to myself as much as anyone, that my art is bigger than any single subject or material.

Water, glass, resin, rock, timber. The creek doesn't ask what kind of water it is. It just FLOWS.
