Story of the Piece - Waterfall

Some pieces begin with a grand vision. This one began with an offcut.

When I finished another piece, this small section of timber was left behind. I almost didn't keep it. But when I turned it over and looked at it properly, I saw immediately what it was — the crevices running through it looked exactly as though water had carved them out over hundreds of years, the way a waterfall carves through rock. Nature had already done the work. All I had to do was make the water visible.

The blue resin waterfall came first — poured carefully into those natural channels, following the paths the timber had already made. The mushrooms grew around it the way mushrooms do, finding their spots in the crevices and along the edges. And then, because the piece was so small and so perfectly formed, it became obvious that someone had to live here. Someone small. Someone who had found the best possible spot beside a waterfall and built a home there.

The little green house arrived and never left.

Waterfall is part of the last series of small natural timber mushroom log pieces I will make. My practice is moving toward bigger stories and larger scales. But this small piece of timber that almost didn't make it — this one reminded me that the best things are sometimes found in what's left over
