Story of the Piece: The Door
Some pieces you make. Some pieces you find. And some pieces - the rarest ones - arrive already complete, needing only someone with the right eyes to see what they are.
This piece of timber was a door the moment I saw it. Not a door waiting to be carved or shaped or constructed - a door that nature had already made, perfectly, in the grain and the hollow and the particular way the wood had aged into something that could only ever be an entrance to somewhere else. I didn't impose that on it. I simply recognised it.
The most perfect fairy door. Nothing else. Nothing else was ever possible.
Once you know there's a door, the world on the other side becomes the question. I built it carefully, the knocker, the gold keyhole set into the face of the timber, because every proper door deserves a proper lock!
And then, around the back and to the sides, the world that lives beyond it: hand painted spotted mushrooms in purple and teal and gold, tiny stepping stones worn smooth by very small feet, flowers in pink and yellow pushing up through the moss, a purple flower light, there for whoever lives inside.
The Door is an invitation to whatever YOU imagine is on the other side - that's what's there.
