Story of the Piece: Found

Some pieces begin with an idea. This one began with a walk.

Not long after Cyclone Jasper came through Far North Queensland in late 2023, I found these three pieces of timber. The cyclone had done what cyclones do — moved things, displaced things, left the landscape rearranged and raw. And there they were. Three separate pieces, each with their own history, their own markings, their own shape. The colours and patterns in the wood stopped me in my tracks.

Those dark branching lines running through the timber aren't damage — they're the work of beetles, tunnelling through the living wood beneath the bark, leaving behind a map of where they've been. Each larva carves its own winding path, fanning outward from a central channel, creating a pattern that looks like rivers seen from above, or lightning frozen in wood. No two pieces of timber will ever carry the same marks. These patterns are as unique as a fingerprint — made by nature, preserved by time, revealed by the storm that stripped the bark away and brought them into the light.

I knew immediately these three pieces belonged together. I didn't force them into anything. I just listened to what they were already saying and built around it. The crystals came later — tucked in where the timber asked for them. The light came last, because some things deserve to be seen in the dark.

Found is exactly what it says it is. Three things that were lost to a storm, found by someone who was paying attention, and brought together into something that didn't exist before that walk.

The things that have lived get to live again — and become something that lives in another person's soul.
