Story of the Piece: Waterhole

In Far North Queensland, the waterhole belongs to the crocodile. Everyone else is just visiting.

I have seen them in the wild — and nothing quite prepares you for it. The sheer power of them, the size, the absolute stillness before the movement. A crocodile doesn't hurry. It doesn't need to. It has been the apex of this landscape for millions of years and it knows it. There is something deeply humbling about being in the presence of a creature that ancient and that certain of its place in the world.

The Waterhole is the first piece in my FNQ Resin Worlds series — a permanent, growing collection of Far North Queensland captured in resin and time. Each piece in this series is a world unto itself: a moment from this extraordinary landscape frozen in resin, colour and natural materials, so that the creatures and waterways of FNQ can be seen up close by anyone, anywhere in the world.

This series will never be finished because FNQ itself is never finished — there is always another creature, another waterway, another moment worth capturing.

The resin water is poured and layered to create depth and movement. The driftwood, pebbles, lily pads and gravel are all sourced from or inspired by the waterways of Far North Queensland. The crocodile is exactly where he belongs — in complete command of everything around him.

Materials: Resin, local river pebbles, driftwood, lily pads, ceramic lotus embellishments.
