Story of the Piece: She Watches

She has always been here. The light just makes her visible.

She Watches is the first piece in my Dark Worlds series — and one of only two witch pieces I will ever make. Her sister is yet to come. But this one arrived first, fully formed, as if she had been waiting.

The tree beside her is Casuarina root — found here in Far North Queensland, this extraordinary place that gives me materials I could never source anywhere else. Its bare, twisted form needed no intervention. Nature had already made it exactly as a tree standing in the dark should look. The witch herself stands in the moonlight, still, patient, entirely unbothered by whatever is watching her — because she is the one doing the watching.

The base is built in two resin pours — a moonlit clearing built up in layers, with fog curling around her feet the way it does in the deep dark of a forest at night. Each layer was allowed to cure before the next was added, the fog taking shape slowly and deliberately between the pours. Beneath it, a pink USB light glows upward through those layers, transforming the piece completely in the dark. In daylight she is atmospheric. At night, with that light beneath her and the fog curling at her feet, she becomes something you didn't expect to feel quite so strongly about.

She Watches asks nothing. She simply stands at the edge of the light and waits.
