Story of the Piece: Ray of Light
Ray of Light is a sculptural meditation on movement, presence, and the language of underwater light. A solitary ray arcs forward, suspended mid-glide — as though we’re witnessing it from just beneath the waves, where sunlight plays across water and time slows to breath. Beneath it, a tide of glowing blue glass catches and reflects the light, like sunbeams filtered through the shallows. The ray moves not in haste, but in harmony — carried in the current.
This piece was created from reclaimed driftwood, hand-painted marine detail, glass and resin elements, natural sand, embedded lighting, and blue-toned starfish — designed to evoke the shifting light of ocean shallows. Hidden within the driftwood’s natural curve, the starfish appear as quiet symbols of resilience and renewal. Their presence invites pause, a closer look, and perhaps a little wonder.
The hollowed arch of wood frames a layered silhouette — blue upon blue — shaped and painted to suggest distant reef life, softened by distance and filtered through sea and light. The base is gently textured to suggest a sandy seafloor, with the light glowing upward through glass and drift, as though the ocean itself were lit from within.
Ray of Light is inspired by the coastal waters of Far North Queensland — and by the silent grace of the creatures that inhabit them. It is a piece about stillness in motion, and the way light can transform even the most weathered forms. A reminder that beauty is often found just below the surface — quiet, luminous, and waiting to be seen.
