Story of the Piece: Lizards Watch

Lizard’s Watch is a sculpted still life — a miniature moment plucked from the forest floor and preserved in reverence. This piece was inspired by the Wet Tropics World Heritage Areas that encircle my home in Clifton Beach, from the Kuranda Range to the Daintree Rainforest. Each morning, we walk our dog through a nearby patch of rainforest just a street away, where the forest gently sheds its textures — fallen leaves, curled bark, scattered twigs.

These small offerings became the foundation for this work. Atop the log, a skink rests, basking under hand-shaped copper mushrooms that rise delicately from weathered wood streaked with mossy hues. Nestled beneath, a green tree frog hides — a quiet witness. The forest floor, captured beneath a resin gloss, holds each leaf in place, ensuring it will never fade. Every element was gathered, shaped, or placed with care. Nothing here is artificial — only reimagined.

Lizard’s Watch is a reminder to pause, to notice, and to honour the lives unfolding quietly beside our own. In the forest, nothing is wasted. What falls becomes home. What decays gives life. Leaf litter is more than debris — it is habitat, history, and quiet beauty.

In this piece, each fallen fragment is seen, preserved, and celebrated. A reminder that even the smallest things — when gathered with care — can tell a story worth keeping.
